Survey on Public Transportation

The purpose of this survey was to learn more about young adult’s transportation habits. Furthermore, I wanted to know if we are as involved in environment as we say we are, and also the reasons of using a car, if we don't use public transportation services.

As I said, the survey has been answered by young adults, between 18 to 21 years old, who come from a large city network (St Hilaire, St Bruno, Longueuil, St Amable, St Hubert, etc.). On the 20 participants of this survey, the main point that comes out is that 55% of them use their car to go to school, instead of public transportation or carpool. However, it's not necessarily because they don't have an ecological conscience; 60% of them think it is great that a city offers these services to its citizens and 50% of them think it's a good solution for car pollution and a good way to preserve environment. Mostly are simply unsatisfied by their city public transportation services (55%). On a side, it's because buses' schedules do not fit with their school schedule or they live so far of their school that they do not have enough time to transport their selves with buses and/or subways. On the other side, it's because their city public transportation system is too expensive and not enough accessible (35%).

What I learn with this survey is that people who live near of Montreal (Longueuil) are pleased by the accessibility of their public transportation system. However, it's when you live far of the city that you find less possibilities of transportation and the most simple and practice solution is using a car to go to school(the use of public transportation is mostly between 7h30 a.m. to 6h00 p.m.). Even if most of people do not use public transportation, many of them like to use buses or subways when they go out during week ends. They seem to be open and interested(55%) to have a 24 hours service of public transportation for Montreal City and surroundings cities, but the majority thinks it will be not enough used to be profitable.

A survey is very difficult to build. You have to make general questions for the largest public can answer it. Also, you have to ask questions that aren't biased, that doesn't have a part of the answer in it or where your personal opinion comes out(ex: Do you think testing products on animals is right, even if some die, get hurt or give birth to malformed babies?). Maybe on a next survey, it could be interesting to make the emphasis on the polluting aspect of car using.
